Black opal is comes in two flavors: black opal and black crystal opal. 

Black opal is a layer of precious opal with a layer of black common opal behind it making a natural doublet, helping to brighten and deepen the colors you experience. 

Black crystal opal is called "black" when it has a dark body tone to the stone of grey or black.
