Charoite

Charoite is a beautiful fibrous purple stone from near the Chara River in Siberia Russia. This is the only place in the world this rare silicate stone is found. It was first thought to be fake or dyed when it was first found.

It was thought to be named for the local river but now it is believed to be named after the Russian word chary, meaning magic or charms

Charoite has a conchoidal or shell like fracture and was discovered in 1978. It's thought it took so long to discover it as it is unremarkable and even an ugly rock in the field. Just look at the beauty locked inside!
