About Luna Agate

🌕 Luna Agate | Purple Craters from the Mexican Highlands
Luna Agate is a distinctive purple and white orbed agate from Mexico, known for its moon-like markings and swirling crater textures. It ranges from soft gray-lavender with hints of green to bold, amethystine purple, sometimes all in the same stone.
This variety comes from the agate-rich regions of Durango and Chihuahua, where ancient volcanic activity and silica-rich fluids shaped some of the most surreal nodules in the world. The name “Luna” wasn’t just about the color—it was a nod to the Apollo space race era when it was first being marketed, and to the cratered, lunar look of the stone itself.
The rough is said to resemble stromatolite textures in some pieces—suggesting microbial influence in its formation, similar to other biologically textured agates. This gives Luna Agate a dual story: one of volcanic chemistry and one of possible ancient life signatures, trapped in the cooling crust of prehistoric Mexico.
It’s important not to confuse this material with similarly named “Luna Agate” from New Mexico—they are geologically and visually different stones.
Rare, dreamy, and subtly cosmic, Luna Agate is a beautiful reminder that Earth’s rocks don’t need to come from space to feel otherworldly.
