This is the color labradorite people hunt for. At rest, the stone is smoky gray and understated, then the light catches it and a broad electric blue flash opens across the center with violet and purple spreading along the edges. The long marquise shape follows the direction of the feldspar beautifully, turning the internal lines into part of the design.
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar famous for labradorescence. Its color comes from light interacting with extremely fine internal structures in the feldspar, so the blue and purple arenāt surface color at all. They appear, disappear and shift as the stone moves. This piece has an especially strong blue-purple response across a large portion of the face.
