This piece looks like the stone broke apart, shifted, and then decided the fractured version was better. Deep wine red and smoky mauve fragments sit in a fine-grained matrix scattered with pale cream and muted pink mineral flecks. The sharp little boundaries between fragments give it a wonderfully geological look... you can actually see the disruption preserved in the pattern.
This is a brecciated variety of Velvet Basin Jasper, with angular fragments incorporated into contrasting matrix rather than the smoother patterning seen in much of the material. The stone is dense, opaque and finely textured, taking a glossy polish that makes the individual fragments and subtle banding near the point easy to see.
