This is exactly the kind of carnelian that makes Pacific Northwest rockhounding so satisfying. Rich burnt orange and reddish brown glow through the stone, with subtle fortification banding visible beneath the surface. Thereās also a natural healed fracture running across it, part of the stoneās history rather than something I wanted polished out of existence.
This carnelian comes from Southwest Washington, where silica-rich fluids filled cavities and fractures in volcanic rocks and slowly built layers of chalcedony. Iron gives carnelian its warm orange-to-red color, and this piece has enough translucency to really light up when it catches the sun.
