What Is Moldavite?
Moldavite is a rare form of tektite—a natural glass formed by a meteorite impact—that comes from the forests and gravel beds of Bohemia, in what is now the Czech Republic. It was created over 14 million years ago when a meteor slammed into Earth with enough force to melt and fling terrestrial material into the sky. That molten material cooled mid-air, then rained down as green impact glass.

Real Moldavite is extremely rare. Most known deposits are now exhausted or heavily regulated, and the real stuff is getting harder to find. Its distinct green hue comes from a mix of iron, manganese, nickel, and potassium oxide.

Because demand is high and supply is low, Moldavite is one of the most commonly faked stones on the market. In fact, an estimated 95% of what's sold online—and plenty in rock shops—is fake. Many are just melted bottle glass or lab-made knockoffs passed off as genuine.

If you're shopping for Moldavite, it's worth learning what real pieces look and feel like—and buying only from sources you trust.
